Congregate meals are meals served in group settings to people who are at least 60 years of age. Meals are served 5 to 7 days a week. Besides the regular menu, birthday, holiday, and special dinner menus may be available. The meals are healthy and designed to meet the nutritional needs of adults 60 and over. Most sites also offer a diabetic menu. Many offer ethnic meals such as Chinese, Italian, or Mexican foods. Nutrition and other healthcare education is often provided before or after the meal.
All income levels are welcome, but these meal programs often serve the neediest older adults. Anyone at least 60 years old and his or her spouse can receive meals. Some programs also serve younger people who have disabilities. No one over age 60 is turned away.
Meals may be served at:
Transportation may be provided for those who need it.
The meals are funded through the local Area Agency on Aging. There are no set fees for meals, but people are encouraged to make a small donation. The suggested donation amount may vary, but it is always low-cost. Asking about income before deciding whether to serve someone is not allowed. Meal sites with low budgets may not serve meals every day or may limit how many people are served.
