What is this medicine used for?

This medicine is applied to the skin to treat itching and irritation caused by scabies or other skin problems. This medicine comes in cream and lotion (liquid) forms.

What should my healthcare provider know before I take this medicine?

Tell your healthcare provider if you are allergic to any medicines.

Females of childbearing age: Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Do not breast-feed while using this medicine without your healthcare provider's approval.

How do I use it?

Wash your hands before and after using this medicine.

Check the label on the medicine for directions about your specific dose. Use this medicine exactly as your healthcare provider prescribes. It is for external use (on your skin) only.

If you are using the lotion, shake the bottle well just before using. Keep the medicine away from your eyes or mouth.

For scabies:

  • Take a bath or shower and towel dry before putting the medicine on your skin.
  • It may be best to apply this medicine right before you go to bed at night.
  • Rub a thin layer of medicine into the skin from your chin to your toes. Be sure to get the medicine into places where your skin folds (such as inside your elbows, under your arms, behind your knees).
  • Trim the fingernails short, then make sure you put the medicine under fingernails to get rid of all scabies.
  • Wait 24 hours, then, without washing, apply a second dose.
  • Change your clothing and bed sheets the next day and wash them thoroughly in hot water.
  • Take a bath or shower 48 hours after the last time you use the medicine.

For itchy skin without scabies, gently massage the medicine into the irritated skin until it is completely absorbed. Repeat as needed.

Do not use other skin care products on the treated skin area unless your healthcare provider approves.

What if I overdose?

An acute overdose of this medicine is not likely to cause life-threatening symptoms. If you think that you or anyone else may have taken too much of this medicine, call the poison control center at 800-222-1222.

What should I watch out for?

Do not use the medicine on open sores or badly scraped skin. Check with your healthcare provider.

If your condition does not improve in a few days or if it gets worse, contact your healthcare provider.

If you need emergency care, surgery, or dental work, tell the healthcare provider or dentist you are using this medicine.

What are the possible side effects?

Along with its needed effects, your medicine may cause some unwanted side effects. Some side effects may be very serious. Some side effects may go away as your body adjusts to the medicine. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that continue or get worse.

SYMPTOMS IF THE MEDICINE IS ACCIDENTALLY SWALLOWED: burning and irritation of the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach; nausea; vomiting; and abdominal pain. Get emergency medical attention right away.

Life-threatening (Report these to your healthcare provider right away). If you cannot reach your healthcare provider right away, get emergency medical care or call 911 for help): Allergic reaction (hives; itching; rash; trouble breathing; chest pain or tightness in your chest; swelling of your lips, tongue, and throat).

Serious (report this to your healthcare provider right away): Severe skin rash and itching.

Other: Mild itching or stinging, dry skin.

What products might interact with this medicine?

No significant drug interactions have been reported. However, do not use other skin products on the areas of the skin being treated with this medicine unless your healthcare provider approves.

If you are not sure if your medicines might interact, ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider. Keep a list of all your medicines with you. List all the prescription medicines, nonprescription medicines, supplements, natural remedies, and vitamins that you take. Be sure that you tell all healthcare providers who treat you about all the products you are taking.

How should I store this medicine?

Store this medicine at room temperature. Keep the container tightly closed. Protect it from heat, high humidity, and bright light.
