Moles

What are moles?

Moles or nevi are tan, brown, or black spots on the skin. Most adults have 20 to 30 moles. They first appear around 1Â year of age, and we are constantly getting new ones. They do not fade and they last throughout our lives. In general, they are harmless.

When should I call my child's healthcare provider?

Call during office hours if:

  • You want the mole removed for cosmetic purposes.
  • The mole is pitch black AND your child was born with it.
  • The mole is growing rapidly in size.
  • The mole has bled or become an open sore.
  • The mole has changed colors (especially to red or blue).
  • The surface has become lumpy.
  • There is a family history of melanoma.
  • You have other questions or concerns.
