Type of medicine: pediculicide
Generic and brand names: spinosad, topical; Natroba
This medicine is used to kill head lice and their eggs.
Before taking this medicine, tell your healthcare provider if you have ever had:
Females of childbearing age: Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not breast-feed while taking this medicine without your healthcare provider's approval.
Check the label on the medicine for directions about your specific dose. Use this medicine exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Do not use it more often or longer than directed. Do not put this medicine on open cuts or broken skin.
This medicine is for external use only. Do not get the medicine in your eyes, mouth, or vagina. Cover your face and eyes with a towel before applying the medicine and keep your eyes tightly closed. If it gets into the eyes accidentally, flush them with plenty of cool tap water.
Shake the bottle well right before you use it. Apply the solution when your hair is dry. Rub in the medicine until your scalp and hair are completely covered. It is very important to use enough medicine to completely cover all of your scalp and hair.
Wash your hands after using the medicine.
Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water after 10 minutes. You may use a fine-toothed comb to remove dead lice and eggs.
You may need a second treatment if lice are still present after 7 days as directed by your healthcare provider.
If you or anyone else has intentionally taken too much of this medicine, call 911 or go to the emergency room right away. If you pass out, have seizures, weakness or confusion, or have trouble breathing, call 911. If you think that you or anyone else may have taken too much of this medicine, call the poison control center. Do this even if there are no signs of discomfort or poisoning. The poison control center number is 800-222-1222.
Symptoms of an acute overdose have not been reported.
Do not use this medicine on infants or children under 4 years of age unless your healthcare provider tells you to do so. Their skin may absorb too much medicine and they may have serious side effects. An adult should supervise use of this medicine on children. Make sure children close their eyes tightly to keep this medicine out of their eyes. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before using this medicine.
Check for signs of lice on all household members. They may also need to be treated for lice. Lice can be spread from person to person. Talk with your healthcare provider about this.
To prevent the lice from coming back, wash all clothes, bed clothing, washcloths, towels, hats, scarves, combs, hair clips, and brushes in hot water for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Dry on high heat for 20 minutes. This should kill eggs that have not yet hatched.
This medicine is for external use only. If it is swallowed by accident, get emergency medical help right away.
If you need emergency care, surgery, or dental work, tell the healthcare provider or dentist you are using this medicine.
Along with its needed effects, your medicine may cause some unwanted side effects. Some side effects may be very serious. Some side effects may go away as your body adjusts to the medicine. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that continue or get worse.
Life-threatening (Report these to your healthcare provider right away). If you cannot reach your healthcare provider right away, get emergency medical care or call 911 for help): Allergic reaction (hives; itching; rash; trouble breathing; chest pain or tightness in your chest; swelling of your lips, tongue, and throat).
Other: Scalp or skin redness, burning, stinging, or dryness; hair loss; eye redness or burning.
If your eyes or skin get irritated, rinse with water. Contact your healthcare provider if the irritation or any other side effect does not improve or does not go away.
No significant drug interactions have been reported for this medicine.
Because there is a small risk that some of this medicine may be absorbed into your system, tell your healthcare provider about any other medicines you are taking or using.
If you are not sure if your medicines might interact, ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider. Keep a list of all your medicines with you. List all the prescription medicines, nonprescription medicines, supplements, natural remedies, and vitamins that you take. Be sure that you tell all healthcare providers who treat you about all the products you are taking.
Store this medicine at room temperature. Keep the container tightly closed. Protect it from heat, high humidity, and bright light. Keep this medicine in a safe place, away from medicines that are taken by mouth.
