Therapeutic Recreation

What is therapeutic recreation?

Therapeutic recreation uses leisure activities like games and crafts to help people function better. People who may benefit include:

  • the physically disabled
  • the mentally disabled
  • the mentally ill
  • older adults whose ability to do things is limited.

Recreational therapists plan activities that promote physical, emotional, and social wellness. This kind of a program can help you:

  • enjoy life more
  • develop goals
  • learn and practice skills they need to care for themselves
  • be as independent as they can be
  • gain confidence and a sense of achievement
  • have the chance to be with others
  • learn to cope in different situations.

How does it work?

The therapist sets the goals of the therapy program after looking into your abilities, interests, needs, and desires. The therapist then creates a written plan that can be used to measure your progress. Activities in the program may include:

  • games
  • arts and crafts
  • cooking
  • shopping
  • exercises
  • group sports.

The therapist may draw upon the skills of other experts to reach the goals set out in the plan, such as:

  • doctors
  • nurses
  • psychologists
  • physical, occupational, and speech therapists
  • vocational counselors
  • social workers.

How can it help?

Here are some examples of activities and possible benefits:

  • Exercise activities and sports can improve your balance, movement, and muscle strength.
  • Group activities can increase self-esteem, confidence, and social skills and help you make more friends.
  • Doing things like swimming or hiking can relax your mind and body and help you manage stress.

Who provides it?

Recreational therapists must have a college degree. They may be certified. Many states also require that therapists be licensed.

Therapists may work out of a doctor's office, senior center, health club, or city recreation department. They may also practice privately out of their own offices. Ask your healthcare provider to refer you to therapists in your area.

Does insurance cover it?

Therapeutic recreation is covered by Medicare for some conditions. It is also covered by many health insurance policies. Check with your insurance company and healthcare provider about what you need to do to get a therapy referral.
